THE DICKEY

An adaptive reuse project located along Dekalb Avenue near downtown Atlanta, The Dickey is a complete transformation of an older warehouse into new retail and office suites, plus a restaurant shell. We approached the project as an exercise in editing, with surgically carved new openings into the building to create a more engaging public space. New storefronts were pulled back from the face of the structure to provide a broader separation from the parking lot. An ipe-clad public plaza was formed by removing portions of the existing roof, and is directly connected to a coffee shop inside. The ipe plaza flows seamlessly to the front of the existing building, providing a larger elevated porch. New exterior walls created by the public plaza are clad in aluminum siding, contrasting with existing white-painted brick.
