THE GENERAL MUIR

For this modern deli, it all began with a photo of our client’s mother on the deck of the holocaust survivor transport ship called The General Muir. Next came a pair of vintage industrial lights and a book called Subway Style inspiring us with clean white tile and sturdy steelwork. Of course we looked at some of the famous New York delis too but overall we wanted a more airy space that also took a few clues from an earlier restaurant we’d designed for this client. A dozen globe and chicken wire pendants over the main dining room and the brass table lamps on the marble topped bar add warmth and coziness as you’re enjoying the chef’s family recipe of matzo ball soup and a great cup of coffee.
